The combination of the most avant-garde architecture and design with original pieces of ancient Asian make the Urban an ethnic, magical and unique hotel: tropical Wenge wood, green marble from Guatemala, Trent mosaics, totems and figures from Papua New Guinea, white marble from Thassos, Chinese portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries a collection of Hindu figures from the 19th century and an Papua New Guinea museum. It is a gateway to art and history in the very centre of Madrid!
The collection of Chinese, Hindu and African pieces is distributed throughout different points of the hotel including the guest rooms, creating a full interaction with guests and visitors. It is a combination of hotel service and art that is the distinguishing mark of the Derby Hotels Collection.
On the building's ground floor there are dozens of figures and totems from Papua New Guinea from the end of the 19th century.
Above a skylight between the atrium and function rooms, various ceremonial sculptures from the lands of the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea are on display, brought by an expedition of archaeologists in the 1930s. Highlights in the hotel's hallways and restaurants are the Ming Dynasty prints, bronze Osiris figures, bas-reliefs and ushabtis (funerary pieces) from pharaophs Ramesses II, Senkamanisken and Tahark.
The rest of the floors and guest rooms have small Hindu statues and Chinese figures from the end of the 19th century on display.
Papua New Guinea Museum
The museum is devoted to jewellery and apparel such as necklaces, diadems, crowns and pectorals and also to ritual objects such as knives, sorcerer's bags or yam masks. It is an exciting trip to discover and to contemplate the works of cultural groups that have kept great part of their ancestral traditions up to the present times.
