We all cherish that special area in our house where we retreat to dream, to embark on Netflix marathons or to immerse ourselves in a good read… our living room.
We at Derby Hotels Collection, jointly with our Design team, would like to share some tips and inspire you to transform your living room into a truly unique space this season.
1. LESS IS MORE
The perennial proposition, you only need the essentials if your approach is to create a space that is both practical and cosy. A minimalist, paired down space can have a contemporary vibe but choosing a few objects and mixing styles can be very effective too.
2. LIGHTING MATTERS
Both natural and artificial sources of light are key considerations that can drastically impact the look and function of your living room. Use directional light to highlight those elements in the space that you consider salient or focal points such as a picture on the wall, a library or perhaps a vintage chair.
3. COLOUR AND TEXTURES
The use of natural fibres and textiles such as linen and cotton can give your living room a relaxed, clean and atemporal feel and so does a predominantly neutral colour palette. You can juxtapose the plain and neutral with floral, naturalistic-scenes or geometric-pattern prints in cushions and other accessories in your space to add interest and break the monotony.
4. THE POWER OF NATURE
Plants and flowers not only beautify spaces but can also be used to define an area or environments. When deciding on plants take into consideration the amount of sun light in your living room first, a Ficus Lirata or a (young) Kentia palm could work well. For a more exotic oriental look a bonsai tree or shrub could also be an option.
5. A WELCOMING READING CORNER
Choose and style your reading nook – reading as traveling are fundamental to the soul and the intellect. You may be able to transform your favourite armchair by upholstering it new using an interesting fabric or print or by playing with a selection of nice cushions. Then signify your reading corner in the living room by positioning a floor lamp to zone the dedicated reading area and indulge in a good book.
